Optical Illusion: Color Aftereffect Illusion

Stare at the red dot in the illustration above for 10 seconds. When the GIF illustration goes from the colored landscape to the black and white building outlines, pastel colors will show up on the white background.

This illusion is the result of afterimages, an effect that is often used by artists to encourage our eyes to work in unexpected ways. Afterimages are also known as ghost images or image burn-in.

Afterimages result from strong bright colors or lights which temporarily burn an image into your retina. When you then look at a white or light background, your eyes will continue to see the aftereffect of the image burn-in.
